Cerenaut Research is explicitly working towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) using the best tricks from Machine Learning, Computational Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence. We are incorporated as an Australian startup, but with connections all over the world. Our team has decades of experience applying artificial intelligence & machine learning in real-world applications, and a track record of commercial success.

Cerenaut has been an active research project since 2011 and was incorporated in 2017. We are a for-profit organization that strives to build collaborations across academia and industry, and contribute to open research.

What is AGI?

Artificial General Intelligence “ …. is the intelligence of a (hypothetical) machine that could successfully perform any intellectual task that a human being can. It is a primary goal of artificial intelligence research.” Wikipedia

Most AI and ML is “narrow”, meaning that it is designed for a single specific purpose. While true Artificial General Intelligence is still far away, in the short term we can augment machine learning with increasingly ‘general’ capabilities and features. Unlike most AI/ML, general intelligence should not require tailoring to specific problems. Instead, it learns continuously from interactions with a world, developing an internal representation by exploring and exploiting what it already knows. Algorithms with general intelligence features are applicable to a wider range of problems and tasks.

We can’t build an AGI now, but we believe there’s still value in moving in that direction. Microsoft and OpenAI recently announced their intention to do the same, describing these technologies as “Pre-AGI”.

This robot - one of ours! - is a Narrow AI. It can only perform a single, well-defined function. By contrast, General AI will be able to fulfil many functions using the same architecture.

Our mission is to develop algorithms with general intelligence qualities. We approach this by combining principles of biological cognition and machine learning to devise and empirically test novel and promising ideas.​

Ethical & Responsible AI

We will develop AI in an ethical and socially responsible way. We believe that the greatest near-term danger and harm due to AI/ML is the promotion and spread of misinformation and political propaganda online. The world cannot respond to crucial issues such as climate change, Covid-19 or inequality when a large constituency doesn’t even recognise the existence of the problem! AI & ML contributes to this problem in the form of tools and models that recommend content; collect and analyse information about people; and manipulate public opinion and discourse.


We support the community by networking and connecting with business and academic organisations, collating targeted research and publishing our own. We maintain an archive of relevant information and release Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) where appropriate. We acknowledge the social costs of industry disruption and advocate for measures to improve income security and equality.
